When the Communists took over and my family fled to Taiwan, he was 3 years old at the time. and grew up in San Francisco, as an Asian American.
My mother was born and raised in Taiwan to Taiwanese parents. These days, I’m an expat (an expatriate is a person temporarily or permanently residing in a country and culture other than that of the person’s upbringing) living in Thailand and teaching in countries like China, Singapore, and Malyasia.
And in cities like Shanghai, Hong Kong, Beijing, Bangkok, and Chiang Mai, they are a notorious paradise for Western men who have a serious case of yellow fever and are literally shopping for Asian girls. Ironically, here in Asia I find it easier dating Western girls.
Being in Thailand and Shanghai makes things ten times harder as an Asian guy who has a weakness for Western women. The dating scene I know and love is so radically different from what it’s like to date in Thailand and Shanghai that I had a serious learning curve when I made the move.
One thing it’s not, according to one female expat, is an ideal place for a western woman to find romance.
Global Times recently published an article written by a “Stephanie N.” Titled “Single foreign females in China don’t have it easy“, Stephanie complains that circumstances are tough for her and other foreign women when it comes to finding love in Shanghai, saying that the “odds are simply against us” and calling the entire experience “bittersweet”.
Well, yes, but also having to open their eyes to the possibility of romance with expat men that under any normal circumstances they wouldn’t go near.I am really sad about the girls here all love expats. The thing is you have to get out and meet people and be proactive eith dating, if you don't local guys won't chat you up and expat guys will mainly be looking for Chinese girls and not have eyes for you and you'll get dejected. Two regulars posters on here are expat women with Chinese husbands so don't discount the Chinese guy route either. However, unlike the majority of Western women living in China, who watch bitterly as the egos of below-average men swell from the admiring looks of Chinese girls, I took an altogether different approach and chose to date Chinese men instead. If you didn’t already know, I’m Chinese by ethnicity, American by nationality, Asian-American by culture and Taiwanese by heritage.
